Holy is Your Name

As I have studied Jesus’ example prayer, I have looked for Bible verses that help me pray each portion. Jesus started with “Holy is Your name”. This is an indicator of respect and praise. God is worthy of praise. There is much evidence for God’s worthiness if we pay attention.

Dear Heavenly Father, I want to speak the awe and praise that You deserve. You have done so many wonderful things. Creation is a boast of great beauty and creativity. Sunsets are still one of my favorite parts of creation. You have always followed through on what You promise to do.

Thank You!

Faithful

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your perfect example of faithfulness. Please help us to remember that You value faithfulness in the small things as well as the big. We need Your help in all things. Please help us to see our dishonesty and make corrections. Faithfulness honors You and we want to glorify Your name.

Rejoice and Persevere

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the hope You give. We rejoice in the comfort hope provides. Please help us to persevere though the difficulties we face. We come to You in prayer. Please help us to remain dedicated to prayer as You have commanded. We know Your commands are always right.

Stronghold in the Day of Trouble

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the description Nahum gives of Your power. I praise Your Holy character. You only use Your power to hold the wicked accountable and protect the righteous. Please guide us to seek You first for the help and protection we need. Our lives seem so unsafe to us. Please remind us of Your strength and how You use it.

Endure

Dear Heavenly Father, we often do not have endurance to continue the race. Thank You for the “cloud of witnesses” You tell us about in Your Word. Please help us to remove the obstacles that get in the way of running the race You have chosen for us. Please remind us to look to Jesus who started and perfects the faith. Thank You that Jesus endured the horrors of death on a cross for us. He deserves to sit “at the right hand of the throne of God”.

I pray this in Jesus’ name.

God’s Kingdom

I think one of the hard parts of Jesus’ example prayer is “Your kingdom come”. I don’t think we realize how often we seek to build our own kingdom. 1 Corinthians 10:23-33 talks about having freedom for the sake of building others up. I fear that we want freedom for our own selfish purposes too often. The Bible repeatedly talks about using our freedom to build others up. In this passage we are told “all things are lawful, but not all things build up.”

We need to make choices that help build God’s kingdom. We do that by living in a way that draws people to the One we serve. We need to share that hope to those who have never heard and remind the ones who know Christ of how wonderful the eternal hope of God’s kingdom is.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us direction about how to use the freedom You allow. Please help us to be aware when our own selfishness takes over. Please help us to use our freedom for the sake of the gospel and do everything for Your honor and glory.
